3 – Harry Styles is not a liar or a selfish, deceitful person.
Yup, fight me. At worst, he has lied to protect his image in the media, just like all other celebs (and Zayn.) I don’t give a damn what Zayn’s lyrics say, which are: (apart from the majority being beautiful, insightful, deeply romantic, and poetic) full of contradictions, incoherencies, braggadocio, and promises that are seemingly never fulfilled (where Harry is concerned.)
I don’t find Zayn’s perspective on Zarry very reliable for all of those reasons, which I explained here. And it’s not his fault tbh. He has severe anxiety, for which he self-medicates with weed, and unfortunately weed can make you cloudy-headed even when you’re not smoking it, so it undoubtedly affects his writing. He admittedly smokes a ton of weed, probably every day, therefore his brain development has been severely impaired (like Louis’ and my own brothers’ lol.)
Facts on weed and cognitive impairment:
I don’t mean the weed stuff in a demeaning or disrespectful way, only to explain why it’s difficult to find clarity in a lot of Zayn’s lyrics. (“My brain lives with the cannabis…I prefer speaking in analogies…”)
I personally don’t feel like Zayn thinks Harry is a liar or that his love for him is “fake.” I think that’s just a poor take made by his stans who want to victimize him. But I also know Harry is not a liar because of his general character. He is a man of integrity, and one who comports himself with the utmost dignity, humility, and grace in all circumstances, even when he’s being attacked without warrant. That does not speak to a deceitful or manipulative person.
We can also rest assured Harry is honest because he is rather self-deprecating and almost self-loathing at times, which demonstrates he has much self-awareness and has no problems calling himself out (like he did in “Falling” and in “To Be So Lonely.”) So the moment he does something he regrets or that he feels may have hurt his lover, he writes about it!
He also is not an accuser. He would rather take the blame for something that wasn’t his fault, or compromise on something unreasonable (such as: “you don’t have to say you love me”) rather than point a finger at Zayn and sing about all the hurtful things Zayn has done to him. The only thing he ever complained about was ZAYN LEAVING HIM.
Zayn, on the other hand, can sometimes be an accusatory person (“Entertainer.”) He points the finger a lot in his music and rarely acknowledges his own wrongdoing or flaws. Instead we get songs like “Unphuckwitable” and “Icarus Interlude” bragging about how great he is (which he is.) Or we gets songs like “Good Guy” where he admits to being “not a good guy” but relishes the fact that he knows his lover is so weak-minded they will remain devoted to him no matter what?? (“I’m not a good guy…but I know you’re mine…”)
But of course his fans proof-text his lyrics and pick out all the negative sentiments where he says he felt slighted or hurt, and any place where they see the word “lie.” It’s so effing annoying, and I’m positive these people just don’t understand how writing works.
First of all, just because a person feels another person is lying, doesn’t mean they actually are lying. There is such a thing called a “suspicion” you know? And we know people who smoke weed can tend to be paranoid. And many people who are insecure tend to accuse their partners in the way Zayn does. So he could just feel he’s being lied to about certain things, even if he’s not. Especially because we know Harry’s character is that of a generally honest and good-natured human. So something in Zayn’s descriptions of “lies” doesn’t add up, and it could just be the way people are interpreting those specific lyrics.
For example: “Tell me your lies, cause I just can’t face it.” They take this to mean his lover is lying all the time, but that’s just not true. Zayn is saying he can’t face the truth of what their relationship has become, so he’s asking the person to tell him a lie instead. Like tell him everything is alright, or tell him things will work out. It’s basically the same concept as the 1D song “Tell Me A Lie.”
“Tell me I’m a screwed up mess
That I never listen, listen
Tell me you don’t want my kiss
That you need your distance, distance
Tell me anything but don’t you say he’s what you’re missing, baby
If he’s the reason that you’re leaving me tonight
Spare me what you think, and
Tell me a lie”
So in that case the other person is not a liar, Zayn would just rather hear a lie than the truth sometimes, because as they say “truth hurts.” And while Zayn may mention being lied to occasionally, did you happen to notice he also mentions lying himself? (“Guess I’ll turn you away, say white lies to your face.” and “I’ve been lying to the liars.”)
I also want to talk about the beginning of “It’s You” because people try to say those negative lyrics are also about Harry and it’s just like sighhhhh. They neglect to consider that Zayn was in a toxic relationship with Perrie that ended in 2015, where they were literally fake engaged and he allegedly dumped her by text. She would also later admit she was faking it in bed with him, which lends credence to the fact that they were both faking it in general.
With that being said, I can’t reconcile certain lyrics in “It’s You” and “Entertainer” regarding “faking it” and “lying” as being about Harry. It simply doesn’t add up to the way Harry is with Zayn and how open and honest he is about him in all his music, and how he always seems to be chasing Zayn.
For me, the beginning of “It’s You” is Zayn referencing Perrie TO HARRY, and acknowledging she was only with him for her own agenda and that she doesn’t care for him, and that it’s HARRY he really cared for. This is why he makes the distinction “it’s youuuuuuuuu” like he used to do during “Little Things.”
Zayn is not an idiot, and I don’t care how bad things got between them, he could never logically or reasonably conclude Harry didn’t “give a phuck about what he needed” when Harry cared for him and doted on him throughout the band:
Sorry, but there’s no way in hell Zayn genuinely thought someone as obsessively attentive as Harry didn’t give a phuck about what he needed, especially when Harry was treating Zayn like this when he didn’t realize any of these tiny moments would be edited into compilations to show how caring he was with Zayn.
So that theory of the opening lines of “It’s You” describing Harry is debunked pretty easily. That’s why I know he was referring to Perrie with those lyrics, because it’s obvious she was with him for the PR benefits and did not care about his mental health issues. She literally called him a freak and mocked his anxiety in 2014. You think Zayn wouldn’t vent about his experiences with her in his first album to some extent??
Anyway, in songs like “Rainberry” and “No Candle No Light” Zayn seems to describe a neglectful partner who he doesn’t really trust and who doesn’t really care for him. Again, in these songs he is not describing anyone even remotely similar to Harry Styles, who seems quite clingy and attentive when it comes to Zayn. And when compared to songs line “Wrong” and “Good Guy” and “Common” and “You Wish You Knew” where Zayn seems to be pushing a willing and devoted lover away and friend-zoning them of his own volition and telling them their relationship isn’t real (so don’t get comfortable) you may share my confusion with how contradictory the narratives are in all these songs (when combined.)
How can Harry be a neglectful lover who is showing fake love to Zayn when he is constantly pursuing Zayn and talking about how lonely he is and talking about how jealous he is of Zayn’s other partners?? That just shows either Zayn is not singing about Harry in those particular songs, or Zayn is embellishing a narrative for creative expression.
How can Zayn push someone away in “Wrong” tell them they don’t even know him in “You Wish You Knew” and talk about how he’s too defensive and keeps someone shut out in “Common” and tell someone he loves them yet takes it back in “Fingers,” but then complain about his lover not being attentive or caring or loyal to him in NCNL or “Rainberry”??? Then he flips again and goes back to talking about how he’s the one who’s been “lying to the liars and lying with the liars every night” and saying this person has loved him better than anyone before in his life?? IT DOESN’T ADD UP! Does the person love him or not???
It makes zero sense, since he is admittedly the one shutting them out and friend-zoning them in some songs! This is why I don’t like analyzing every single one of Zayn’s songs, they make no sense when added all together. And that’s why I say his perspective is UNRELIABLE because it lacks consistency and bears very little coherency, unlike Harry’s lyrics which appear straightforward and seem to tell a logical story.
The only logical conclusion is that all of these contradictory Zayn songs are not about the same person, and some of them just may be inventive narratives fabricated for the purposes of creative expression, such as in “Sour Diesel” or “Kiwi.”
One thing that can’t be denied is how doting Harry has always been towards Zayn, and how obsessively he loves him and isn’t afraid to show it. And what has also been clear is that Zayn has always been the one pushing Harry away, being overly defensive, not telling him he loves him, and being with other people the entire time they were together, unlike Harry who is often ADMITTEDLY single and dates people in brief spurts. Harry has confirmed his single status in multiple publications over the years, from 2010-2020. One of the most recent times was on Ellen in 2019. Fine Line says it all. So did HS1.
And we’re supposed to believe HE’S the victim in this relationship, and that Harry has always been in the wrong??
Bish, please. The proof is in the pudding, and the facts have ALWAYS revealed a story that cannot be distorted to victimize Zayn.
****** FULL DISCOLSURE: I will not be posting any comments of people trying to maliciously ridicule Zayn, but I also won’t be posting any comments of people trying to blame Harry or make excuses for Zayn’s choices (in regards to Harry.)
